One afternoon this week I decided to take a drive up the coast to find a marina my friends had told me about. I have sometimes thought about the possibility? of getting back into sailing again, but wasn’t aware of any marinas in the area.
I indeed found a jewel of a marina! Just 30 minutes east of Nerja, past Maro and, situated between the towns of La Herradura and Almuñecar lies one of the few marinas along the southern coastline of Spain, Marina del Este.
This is a complete marina, with a spectacular location. The Marina (also known as Puerto Deportivo Punta de la Mona) was developed in the 1980s around a large natural rock formation known as Peñón
de las Caballas (Mackerel Rock) and features a small man-made harbor protected by the pine-clad promontory of the Punta de la Mona.
I took the most scenic way, along the 340 coast road where you pass around the beautiful
La Herradura bay and then take a slow winding road down the foot hill to the marina. On the way down you will pass the Hotel Best Alcazar, a large and modern hotel perched atop Punta de la Mona, just above the Marina. You could easily spend a weekend
here, staying at the hotel, hanging out at the marina with its cafes and exploring nearby La Herradura, considered one of the most beautiful villages of the Granada coast. La Herradura is a hamlet belonging to Almuñecar, the last
town in the province before entering Malaga province. Take a look at the photos… a truly different marina.
